Make sure the FIFO buffers are turned on if the user has a 16550 UART. If the buffers are on, try juggling with their settings until the error goes away.
If this has no effect, then set the FIFO buffers to their default settings, lower their port speed to 9600 and work the port speed up one step at a time until the error repeats itself. Use the highest possible port speed that does not make this error occur.
If the error occurs at 9600bps then the modem is possibly damaged, refer the customer to their manufacturer
